The Bible uses references to familiar things to teach us about unfamiliar things. The selected texts of these meditations use our experience with oceans to teach us about our relationship with God. The Bible records that God yearns for a relationship with each of us. These texts show both how fervently he desires that relationship and how we can respond to his call.
Oceans of Love edition by Katherine Harms Religion Spirituality eBooks
Katherine Harms loves the ocean. She and her husband spend much of their time on their sailboat. It was while cruising that she felt inspired to write this beautiful devotional, based on biblical sayings about the seas. As she tells us, "The Bible uses references to familiar things to teach us about unfamiliar things. The selected texts use our experience with oceans to teach us about our relationship with God."It is a collection of 31 short devotionals, one a day for a month, and each is full of riches, designed to help us strengthen our relationship with God. I find it hard to imagine that anyone who spent a few minutes a day reading one of these devotionals and meditating on the contents wouldn't, by the end of the month, feel greater intimacy in his or her walk with God.
Some of the best are where the author gives her own experiences, and I wish there were more of these. For example, Day 7 in the book, using Psalm 77 as a reading ("The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered.), she writes of how "I have watched a wall of water march inexorably toward our ship as we hurriedly prepared for the invisible hammer that would strike us even even before the visible wall reached our boat. I have wandered from one place to another in the midst of storm, rain and wind, looking hopelessly for a place where the anchor could get a grip on the bottom."
The author is not just an experienced sailor. She seems also to have a deep experience of life's travails, and the ability to understand our own human frailties. She writes well, with deep meaning in all her words. I value and recommend this little book.
