This is an intriguing paranormal romance. I enjoyed it, but with reservations.

Kira is an interesting character. I liked her a lot as she has an inner strength about her. However, I felt that the author didn't allow her the potential to grow too much. She is a young woman (18 years old), who has been raised by the High Priestess as the next guardian of the Temple of Water and Light. In order to save her people, she offers herself up as a sacrifice when her mentor dies and she is accused of killing her.

Tobias is a character I felt sorry for - he's no beast, but a noble dragon in a man's body. He's one of the few Dragon Kings living in a world that is slowly dying due to war and a curse. When Kira's sacrifice pulls him away from his home and his people, he has no choice. He finds himself bonded to her and only he can keep her alive.

I purchased this book due to a recommendation from Amazon due to my preference for paranormal romances. I must admit that it has taken me nearly 4 years to read this due to my rather large reading list. However, once I started it, I didn't put it down until I had finished it.

As I said above, I did enjoy it. However, I was also slightly disappointed at the storyline. The story is told mostly through the eyes of Kira, though other characters' have their say too. The characters were extremely lifelike and the action and danger Kira faced felt real. However, what disappointed me was that the story (which could have been a fantastic fantasy/romance) was brought down by the erotic component of the story. Yes, it's classed a paranormal romance, but there was very little romance and a lot of erotica. It felt like there were two stories meshed into one. I loved the intrigue of Kira's banishment from the village, but felt the storyline became an excuse for explicit sex once Tobias entered it. The story also had several typo's, but as I write this review, I noticed that this book had been given a new cover and re-released in February 2015. Whether the typo's were found and corrected, I cannot say. I also cannot say if there were any other changes to the storyline.

I am a huge sucker for dragon shifter romances, but sadly, this story just didn't reach me in the same way others have in the past. This saddened me. This story had the potential to be fantastic, if only some of the roughness of the scenes had been given a little polishing by an edit. Nevertheless, the fast pace of the tale had me turning the pages. I reached the end of the story, but it left me feeling a little dissatisfied even though it ended on a fairly happy note. I hate feeling this way about a book, as it ruins the overall enjoyment of the story in my eyes. Other readers may have a different experience. I will leave it up to you to decide.

July Lotus Silvermist has written an interesting story. I think this is her debut novel. I loved her fast paced writing style. However, the flow felt a little choppy between scenes. But, this could be sorted out by an edit (which I hope has been done in the re-release). It will be interesting to see what she comes up with next.

Due to the explicit nature of some scenes, I do not recommend this book to readers under 17 (even though this is meant to be a YA paranormal romance). I do, however, recommend this book if you love erotic, paranormal romances with sexy dragon shifters. - Lynn Worton

The Beastly Covenant A Tale of Monsterous Proportion July Lotus Silvermist 9781468019544 Books Reviews

The Beastly Covenant is an amazing adventure, about a girl named Kira who tries to stop a war and find out who she is. Orphaned at a young age, Kira was taken to the Temple of Water & Light and placed under the tender care of the Head Priestess who was her mother's best friend. When the Head Priestess dies Kira is falsely accused of killing her and sent away, but what they don't know is the Head Priestess has trained Kira for this day and she must go and summon the Dragon Warrior. Kira ventures to Dragon's Cave to offer herself as a sacrifice to this dangerous beast in order to save her beloved town. What she does not expect is to start to fall in love with her Dragon Warrior along the way.

Tobias is a Dragon King that will do anything for Kira he will protect her and see to all her needs and care for her like no one else. Even if it means giving his own life for hers, as they journey to stop a war and find out who is trying to kill her. She finds lost family along the way, but she's hiding a dangerous secret from Tobias that may end up getting her killed along the way if the people after her don't get to her first..

From Chapter one I could not put this book down! It was filled with action, adventure and romance. I love how Kira and Tobias's relationship grows along the way. Kira is a strong young woman but also gentle and caring she will do anything for her people, and Tobias well He's really hot!!! He will do anything for her what girl does not want that right! The Beastly Covenant was a really fun read I would defiantly recommend it!
I would love my very own Tobias as I'm sure just about everyone would. This was a very sweet romantic adventure that pulls you in from the first chapter. Just a warning for those who might not be aware this does have a few love scenes in it. Like other reviewers I would love to see what happens next and if Tobias homeland can be saved...the home of the dragons. I'll be looking for more from this author.

As seems to be the norm now there was a few editing errors scattered throughout the book. However, why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars was that a couple of times I thought Kira's actions just wasn't quite believable. While that usually happens in some form or another this story ended with one and it left just a little after taste. Who wouldn't question and have conflicting thoughts about why you grew up as an orphan being shunned by the village when your father was a powerful man who could have made a difference in your life or known you at any time? i think you have to have a little struggle for it to be real.

I loved how sweet Kira was and thought it was refreshing to have a sweet and shy heroine when it seems like so many are writing the kick A girls. While I enjoy those stories too let's face it how many times in life have you met that type of girl? I thought this was a refreshing change but I would have liked it better if she at least had struggled internally with being selfless all the time for people who shun her. In all honesty I don't see how you are treated the way she was and not have, but again it wasn't anything that detracted from the book too much. Although some of her emotional struggles would have made her more realistic and endeared her to the reader even more. Worth the read!
